In his initial description of the syndrome of early infantile autism Leo Kanner emphasized that autism should be regarded as one of the two key defining features of the syndrome.  Although there is general agreement on the lack of social engagement as a, if not the, defining feature of autism, this aspect of the condition has remained poorly understood.  This presentation will provide an overview of recent work on the social aspects of autism focusing on various research strategies and patient groups to clarify the nature of the social difficulties.  Implications for understanding other aspects of the condition and for new approaches to screening and treatment will be summarized.
