Amos Winter is a Post-Doctoral Reserach Associate with the Singapore University of Tehnology and Design (SUTD)-MIT International Design Center. He is currently testing and commercializing the Leveraged Freedom Chair in Guatemala and India. Amos's research interests include: design for emerging markets; design for international development; cross-cultural tech transfer; biomimetic design; fluid, solid, granular mechanics; biomechanics; mechanical, precision machine design; ocean systems; and machine-soil interactions. He received his PhD from the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering in September 2010. His thesis focused on investigating how to design compact, low-power, dynamic, and reversible burrowing systems for use in undersea substrates. The technology and robotic devices resulting from this work are based on the burrowing mechanisms of razor clams.

As a practicing engineer, Amos has worked with Bluefin Robotics, Schlumberger, Massachusetts General Hospital, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Additionally, Amos has engaged in numerous projects focused on developing country mobility aids. He is the principal inventor of the Leveraged Freedom Chair and is the founder and director of the MIT Mobility Lab (M-Lab).
