The Everett Moore Baker Memorial Foundation is an MIT Presidential Institute Committee. The Foundation serves to perpetuate the memory of Dean Everett Moore Baker, a staunch protagonist for the consideration of human beings as individuals, a vigorous proponent of a broad educational policy, a dynamic extra-curricular program, and a congenial physical and intellectual environment at MIT and an ardent worker toward friendly relations among the peoples of all nations.
The Foundation strives to fulfill this goal by pursuing long term initiatives, encouraging and supporting student initiatives, awarding the Baker Excellence in Teaching Award, funding Baker Fellowships, and reporting on the status of the Institute in our Annual Report.
Long Term Initiative: In the past, the Foundation has focused on improving undergraduate advising and fostering greater student-faculty interaction. The Associate Advising program was initiated by the Foundation. Last year the Foundation focused on the Visual Arts Initiative- recognizing the lack of free visual arts studio space around campus, the Foundation proposed that MIT build or renovate a new visual arts studio for painting, drawing and sculpting.
Projects: The Foundation elicits student initiatives which enhance the undergraduate experience. The Foundation helps students define the strategic vision of their projects and provides seed funding. Examples of previously supported or initiated projects are the Associate Advising Program, Coffee Chats for the Network of Sloan Undergraduate Women, Faculty Meet and Greet, UROP Newsletter, Undergraduate Mentorship Program, and the Global Poverty Initiative, and the Visual Arts Initiative.

Baker Fellowships: Baker Fellows are MIT students who choose to work on sustainable community service projects that build capacity for underserved communities locally, nationally, or internationally. The Foundation works closely with the MIT Public Service Center to select the fellows. MIT faculty serve as mentors to the Baker Fellows.
Annual Report:The Annual Report contains: "all preliminary reports, an evaluation of the state of student affairs as they pertain to the current needs within and without the MIT Community, a list of possible programs for which there is an immediate or long term need, an outline of the projects selected for the current year with the reasons for selection, a critical examination of the year's activities, a list of those appointed to the succeeding Foundation committee, and such other material as the Foundation Committee deems desirable", according to the Foundation bylaws.
"The Annual Report of the Foundation Committee shall be distributed to the Chairman of the Corporation, to the President of the Institute, to the Dean of Students, to the president of the Institute Committee, to the members of the Advisory Board, to the `heads of appropriate student and administrative publications, and to all other interested parties.
