Martin Z. Bazant

I am broadly interested in engineering physics and applied mathematics. My research focuses on transport phenomena with applications in energy storage, water purification, and lab-on-a-chip technology. I am developing a class on Electrochemical Energy Systems (10.626/10.426), whose lecture notes and problems provide the starting point for a textbook I am writing on Electrochemical Physics. My faculty career at MIT began in the Department of Mathematics, where I led the Nonlinear Electrokinetics Group, Dry Fluids Laboratory, and Applied Mathematics Computational Laboratory, developed a class on Random Walks and Diffusion (18.366), and continue hold a joint appointment. In 2008, I joined the Department of Chemical Engineering in order to focus more on applied research and to start a new experimental laboratory. My lab is currently developing a new approach to water desalination and investigating transport phenomena in various electrochemical and microfluidic systems, closely coupled to our mathematical modeling.
