Apparent motion is created when dots labeled 1 appear first and are followed by dots labeled 2. Repeated cycling can be perceived either as back and forth horizontal motion (zig-zag) or as vertical motion (see-saw). Prolonged viewing results in spontaneous shifts between these two percepts.
