The Neural Control of Vision
H. The Function of the Midget and Parasol Channels in Vision

parasol systemFigure 28 shows the wiring of the parasol cells in the retina. Their receptive field center is comprised of several cones that are mixed. The bipolar cells of the parasol system have larger arbors than those of the midget system. The parasol retinal ganglion cells are larger and conduct more rapidly to the central nervous system. In central retina only about 1 out of 8 retinal ganglion cells is a parasol cell. In peripheral retina midget and parasol classes of retinal ganglion cells is about equal in number.
