C. Cortical Mechanisms of Visually Guided Saccadic Eye Movements
How
do the signals from the various cortical areas reach the brainstem oculomotor
centers? As shown in Figure 7, removal
of the superior colliculus eliminates electrically elicited saccades from
posterior cortex but does not affect saccades elicited from the frontal
and medial eye fields. Furthermore, lesions of the superior colliculus
cause only modest deficits in visually guided saccadic eye movements.
