The Neural
Control of Visually Guided Eye Movements
C. Cortical Mechanisms of Visually Guided Saccadic Eye Movements
To
study the execution of a sequence of saccades to visual targets, two targets
were presented in succession as shown in the inset of Figure
11. The duration of the targets and the interval between them
was systematically varied. Performance was studied repeatedly various
times after unilateral frontal eye field (FEF) and medial eye field (MEF)
removal. The frontal eye field removal produced major deficits on this
task. By contrast, in the absence of the medial eye fields much smaller
deficits were observed that recovered rapidly.
