Answers to frequently asked questions:

1) I am not a MIT student, can I still join BDC?

Yes, all lessons are open to the public.

2) I'm not a BDC member, how can I get started?

Just come to any or all of the lessons, social dances, or other BDC events you would like to attend. We'd love to have you. You may want to check BDC's schedule online. If you would like to become a member, just let the person working at the front desk know. All membership fees and other rates are posted on our website. If you're a MIT student, the lessons are free if you show your ID card.

3) I forgot my BDC membership card or my MIT ID. Can I still get the discounted rate?

No. Unless the officers actually know that you're a current MIT student or current BDC club member. It is important to bring your membership card or MIT ID.

4) I cannot attend the Sunday workshops or Saturday dances. Do you teach lessons on weekdays?

During the fall and spring semesters, we only teach dances during Sunday workshops and hold several dances on Saturdays. During the Summer and January Term (IAP), we have classes during the selected weekdays. Check on the website to stay updated.

5) I am getting married. We would like to have a few private lessons. Do you teach private lessons?

No. The BDC does not teach private lessons. Please either contact one of the professional instructors of our lessons or the MIT Ballroom Dance Team (bdc-info@mit.edu) to get referral to available teachers.

6) I would like BDC to perform. Does the BDC do performances.

MIT Ballroom Dance Club (BDC) does not do performances. Please check with MIT Ballroom Dance Team (BDT).

7) What is the difference between the Ballroom Dance Club (BDC) and the Ballroom Dance Team (BDT)?

MIT Ballroom Dance Club (BDC) does NOT do performances. It is a social dance club with lessons every Sunday and several dances on Saturdays during the school year. MIT students and the public alike are allowed to join as a member or come to BDC events. MIT Ballroom Dancing Team (BDT) is a competitive dance team (i.e., they go to competitions). BDT is open only to people with MIT affiliation. They also do performances.

8) Do I need to wear special shoes to dance?

No, not necessarily. You may wear any shoes that are comfortable. Generally, soft and flexible shoes with sufficient support and just right amount of traction on the wooden floor are the best. For that reason, experienced dancers do like to wear shoes specifically designed for dancing.
