Ammendments to the Constitution and the Bylaws of the MITBDC


The following ammendments to the constitution and bylaws of the MIT Ballroom Dance Club have been ratified by the appropriate majority of the membership as required by the constitution at the general meeting of the MITBDC on April 9, 2000.

Amendments to the constitution

The following clauses shall be added to Article III (Memebership) of the constitution of the MITBDC to comply with the requirements of ASA (Association of Student Activities) recognition.

A R T I C L E  III Membership

G. Non-discrimination
The MIT Ballroom Dance Club shall not discriminate based on any characteristics listed in MIT's non-discrimination policy.

H. Economic hardship
If the MIT Ballroom Dance Club charges monetary dues, there will be exemptions made for MIT students who cannot afford such dues.

Article IV (Officers), Clause A (Elected Officers) shall be modified to include the office of "Space Coordinator" to reduce the burden of the Workshop Manager and to eleminate the need for this office to be held by an MIT student.

A. Elected Officers
The Club shall elect its officers, who shall be the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Workshop Manager, Space Coordinator, Desk Captain, Publicity Chair, Music Director, Social Director, Newsletter Editor and Webmaster. No person may hold two offices simultaneously. The elected officers of MITBDC shall be automatically granted membership of the Club for their term of office.

Article I (Duties of the Officers) shall be modified as follows.

Clause E (Workshop Manager) will be changed as follows to remove the duties that require the office holder to be an MIT student.

E. Workshop Manager
The Workshop Manager shall arrange for all necessary Club equipment to be brought from storage, set up, removed and re-stored. He/She shall be responsible for purchasing and maintaining all necessary equipment and stores for the smooth operation of Club activities (in coordination with the Desk Captain).

The identifiers for all the subsequent clauses (F,G,H,I,J,K) shall be advanced by one alphabetic character (to G,H,I,J,K,L).

A new clause (clause F) will be added as follows to define the responsibilities of the newly created office of Space Coordinator.

F. Space Coordinator
The Space Coordinator shall be responsible for obtaining space and authorization for Club events, including reserving rooms and advertising space, arranging for set-up and clean-up of these rooms (through the Campus Activities Complex or other relevant organization), registering events, and obtaining any licenses and/or police details as necessary. The Space Coordinator shall be a student at MIT.

Clause L (formerly clause K) (Webmaster) will be modified as follows to guarantee that the webmaster will be able to access the club's web resources.

K. Webmaster
The Webmaster shall create, expand, and maintain the Club presence on the internet such that the community can access information about the Club and its activities in an efficient and a timely manner. He/She shall also be responsible for updating and maintaining the Club's electronic resources and information. The Webmaster shall be an MIT affiliate with regular access to his/her own athena locker.

Article III (Elections of Officers), Clause D, section I, will be modified as follows to include the office of Space Coordinator in the election process.

D. Election procedures shall be as follows:

  • The elections shall be held for the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Workshop Manager, Space Coordinator, Desk Captain, Publicity Chair, Music Director, Social Director, Newsletter Editor and Webmaster, in that order.
