Admissions and Financial Aid

All applicants to the Biological Engineering graduate programs are considered for full financial support regardless of personal resources or citizenship. A student may be supported as a Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant, or Fellow. Fellowships include Training Grants, Division Scholarships, and Institute Awards. The support provided by such appointments usually includes full or partial tuition and a stipend.

General inquiries about the application process and forms should be directed to the BE Academic Office, ( be-acad@mit.edu or 617-253-1712) and in the case of specific research questions, to the appropriate professor.

The admission requirements include an excellent undergraduate record with a major in the life sciences, computer science, physical sciences or engineering, and an outstanding performance on the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test. Entrance requirements are noted under the S.M. and Ph.D. Programs. Applicants admitted with deficiencies are expected to satisfy the Entrance Requirements during the first year of study.

To request a graduate application, go to the MIT Admission Office Home Page or contact the BE Academic Office ( be-acad@mit.edu). Applications should be completed no later than January 15 and must include: an Application Form, Statement of Purpose, Official GRE and TOEFL Scores, Academic Transcripts, three Recommendation Letters, and Application Fee payment. Applications will not be reviewed until all supporting documents have been received. Admission decisions are made by April 15 in most cases.
