Graduate Student Essay Prizes

The Department of English awards two prizes of $100 for the best essays written in a graduate course. One prize is awarded in the category of Literature, the other in the category of Writing. Students in the MA, MTPW, CAGS, and PhD programs may submit work in either or both categories.

Two copies of each essay (in letter quality or NLQ mode) should be submitted to Professor Fairley no later than the end of the second week of the spring quarter. The essays are limited to work done in the preceding Winter, Fall, Spring, and Summer quarters. A student may submit no more than one essay in each category.

The essay should have a cover sheet with the essay title, the student's name, the name of the course, and the instructor's name. The essay title should appear on the first page of the body of the essay, but the student's name should not appear in the essay.

The papers in each category are judged by a panel of faculty. The final decision is made by the Graduate Committee.

The prize winners will present their essays at a Graduate Forum meeting in the Spring quarter.
