Hello, and welcome to my home page. On this page, you

papers, and various sundries. I update this page occasionally, so please check

I am an Associate Professor of Political Science at MIT. I study the political behavior of ordinary citizens While I am primarily concerned with questions of representation and the communication of public sentiment to political elites, I have also studied the continuing power of ethnic stereotypes, the effect of voting reforms, and the power of the media. A detailed statement of my research can be found here.
Recently, I have been studying public opinion concerning foreign policy. I am currently undertaking a study of public opinion and war with a focus on World War II.
| Princeton University Press published my book Silent Voices: Opinion Polls and Political Representation in America in 2004. Here is a brief Q&A from The Chronicle of Higher Education on the findings from the book. Click on the cover to the right to be taken to Amazon, where the book is now available for purchase (now in paperback!). | ![]() |
