In 2009, members of Biodiesel@MIT collaborated with MIT's CoLab. The team devised a plan to help waste pickers in Brazil save money on diesel costs, by helping them convert their diesel trucks to efficiently run waste vegetable oil. In 2010, the team won a $3,000 award from MIT's IDEAs Competition. Phase I of the project was carried out in August 2010, and Phase II is a continuing effort to maintain contacts and spread the technology throughout the Sao Paulo area. Hopefully, the project will continue to grow to include other countries that would benefit from such technology.
