Spunk

adapted by George C. Wolfe with music by Chic Street Man

Director-Margeaux Randolph
Assistant Director-Dimie Poweigha

Spunk is a collection of three stories by Zora Neale Hurston, set to the backdrop of the Blues. Blues Speak Woman and Guitar man take us on a journey of three tales that deal with the dynamics of male and female relationships. The time is probably the 1930s. Sweat is about a washerwoman and her abusive husband. A typical Saturday becomes independence day for Delia but not for Sykes. Man One and Man Two have a front porch seat to all the action. Story in Harlem Slang is about Jelly and Sweetback, two wannabe Harlem Hustlers from the South. Slang Talk Man has been there and done that. The Girl sets them straight. The Gilded Six-bits is about a married couple's seeming lust for gold. Joe knows the gold is fake, but Missie thinks the gold is real until she sees it for herself. Soon Missie gives birth to a son.
