About Me

Last Degree: M.S. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, February 2004

Research Interest:

The objective of my research is to enhance the performances of Ni-Mn-Ga FSMAs through experimental work and fundamental studies. Current work is primarily focused on the investigation of the effect of external driving forces, in addition to the magnetic field, on the actuation performance. Specifically, piezoelectric materials are connected to Ni-Mn-Ga to provide extra driving force for a twin boundary motion. This extra driving force might be able to reduce the required threshold field. In addition, the temperature dependence of this hybrid piezoelectric-FSMAs system is also investigated. The introduction of piezoelectric is expected to increase the martensitic transformation temperature (Tm). Higher Tm would allow a presence of martensitic phase at larger temperature range and, hence, increase the operating temperature range of large actuation.
