Field dispatch 3: Continued monitoring, visit of Fatih Eltahir (my MIT advisor) and Wasila Thiaw (NOAA), and surrounding areas.

July 23, 2005

A trip north of the study site, about 50 km east of Filingue. The rapid increase in aridity is very evident traveling north toward the Sahara, and this area already is much drier than the study site.
Exploring a dry wash.
The Sahel, 50 km east of Filingue as seen from a plateau top.
A nearby village.
Some giraffes not far from the village of Zindarou.

On one recent field visit (July 17), I had a torrential rainstorm typical of the region in the wet season. Here is what the track to Banizoumbou looked like. This was not just one small spot, most of the track was more or less like this.

The same rainstorm's effect on the lateritic plateau top near Banizoumbou.
Jean-Bernard searching for larvae near Zindarou, with some local help.
The helpers.
The larvae.
A team photo taken in downtown Zindarou. To my right are three villagers. To my left are: my advisor at MIT, Fatih; the director of CERMES, Suzanne Chanteau; Jean-Bernard; Wassila of NOAA; Audrey, a French student at CERMES.
