The Sun and the Moon

Long, long ago, when the Land was new, the Gods stood much closer to the center of the Land than they do today. In those times, there was neither day nor night, for the fierce radiance that poured forth from the body of Ndehaso, Lord of Light, fell upon the Land always, and the withering blackness of the Shadow Lord reached into every corner of the Land.

The influence of all the Gods reached right to the center of the Land, and the border between Their domains was clear and sharp. The Gods brought forth in Their own domain things having only Their own nature. And Each God was displeased with the nearness of the works of Their Opposite, and Each demanded that the Other move away. It was brought before Anz to judge, and the Giver of Law declared that it would only be fair for All to take a step towards the edges of the Land. So it was done, and the essences of the Gods mixed in the new space between Them.

The light was much diminished in the Land after the withdrawal of the Lord of Light, for the step of a God is not a small one. This suited the plans of the Lords of the Land not at all, so the Flame was created from the body of Ndehaso and placed in a vessel in the sky, closer to the Land. And Karelas the Namer called the vessel Sun.

Geskekelud looked upon the motionless Sun and declared it dull and boring. So the Lord of Whimsy reached up and grabbed the Sun and flung it across the sky, causing it to swoop down towards the Land, or up away from the Land, or beyond even the edge of the Land and into the realm of the Lord Below. The Shattered One's action pleased not His Northern Brother, so Anz pulled the Sun towards Him and bound it to an orderly set of motion from East to West above the Land, according to the natures of Shagras and Nirian, who created Morning and Evening to mark times of activity and rest. Also did the Sun spend half its time in the Underworld, so the Moon was made and placed opposite the Sun, to appease the Lord of Light during the Sun's absence.

Further was the Sun constrained to move North during Summer and South during Winter, and Anz claimed the times of balance as His holy days, and the Queen of Conflict and the Mother of Peace fixed the days of Their favor also by the new seasons. The Bringer of Discord, of course, bound not His special days to the motion of the Sun, which became both a blessing and a curse for the followers of Chaos during the War of Broken Glass, but that is another story...
