It's funny. You'd have expected to be laid low by poison, or
perhaps a sniper, on a rooftop. That would have been more
appropriate. But to be brought to such softness, by
love?
Unthinkable. Ridiculous. At least, it would be funny if it happened
to someone else. To one of your House's
enemies. As it is,
it's merely pathetic.
For generations, there's been one in your House trained to the art of
subterfuge. To the ``accidental'' death, the overheard conversation,
the unearthed secret no one else knows. Your grandmother trained your
mother, and your mother trained you. As such, you learned to be
sympathetic on the outside, and aloof on the inside. You became a
friend of the Queen's, the better to hear political news, and you were
permitted to choose your own alliance.
So it was that when Count von Torsten proposed a marriage, you gave it
a great deal of thought. The von Torstens are one of the strongest
Houses in Heidelmere, and seemed eminently prepared to survive the
civil war with fortunes and influence intact. An alliance between von
Dietwald and von Torsten would lead to a great deal of benefit for
both houses, and von Torsten would benefit from you in particular,
more than they might expect.
So it was an arrangement of convenience. The long betrothal suited
you quite well --- you hardly wished to be tied down in pregnancy
before you had to. But as the months passed, you found yourself
coming to regard the Count with, first admiration, then affection.
And now, you find yourself entirely smitten with the gentleman! Who
else could understand in three words what takes most of court a good
paragraph to explain? Who else could match your subtlety with his
own? You had not expected to be
happy together, and you find
this new weakness of yours rather disturbing. Who knows how that
might be used against you?
