1. The bowl from Nurl was stolen during the arguement between Creighton and MacSullivan.
2. The bowl was stolen and replaced while people were watching it.
3. The bowl was made from an old plant person from Nurl.
4. The bowl may contain a message for someone.
5. The people who stole the bowl made Max think that the bowl, and the guy with the bowl were in two different places.
6. The guy with the bowl made me think there were two of him.

Based on that, I think...

The distraction was convenient, rather than planned. The crime was committed by a hired master thief who doesn't personally care about the bowl. The bowl is probably still on planet, but being shipped off shortly to Nurl if the thief escapses as that's the only place it's really valuable.
