[*] According to Frank, my personal naval consultant, the terms "first mate" and "second mate" are obsolete and date from the time when all the officers under the Captain were Lieutenants. Then the most senior one was called "First Lieutenant" and so on. Now the second in command is called the "Executive officer." There's no specific job "third in command"; it's just the next senior officer. On a submarine, this is typically the Engineer, but can be any of the 3 dept heads (eng, nav, or weps). This guy has the title "Senior watch officer" as a colateral duty; he's supposed to keep the junior officers from whining and he writes the watch bill. (Nowadays, "First Lieutenant" is the guy (not necessarily a lieutenant) who is in charge of the deck division. These are the guys who handle the lines and swab the deck and stuff.)
