Logs/notes recorded during some experimentation with Power Projection. (Present: Katya, Ruehan, Eva, Kith, Mirris, Martan.) Katya and Ruehan project power into a bunch of stuff, with the following results. (Parameters of the experiment: rolling for higher target number means more care/precision in 'inserting' the power.) (Comments are observations of the experimental subject after the test) > A rock (11s) > STR (Katya) 3 > FOR (Katya) 2 > PRE (Ruehan) 2 The rock seems to be quite solid. And hard. There's definitely a weight to the rock. > A stick of drawing charcoal (11s) > STR (Katya) 1 > FOR (Katya) 1 > PRE (Ruehan) 2 You spend a while looking at the charcoal, and it seems like there should be *something* different about it, as compared to another piece of charcoal, but you can't find anything. > A glass of water (11s) > STR (Katya) 1 > FOR (Katya) 3 > PRE (Ruehan) 3 Power projection seems to be thirsty work; some water would be good right now. This particular water is probably even the right temperature; a little chilled, but not too cold. And Hippocrates's water doesn't have that nasty taste that you get in planetary pipes. > A purely mechanical gizmo (kitchen gadget) (11s) > STR (Katya) 3 > FOR (Ruehan) 2 > PRE (Ruehan) 2 It seems out of place here in the lab, rather than the kitchen. > A (small) chemical battery (11s) > STR (Katya) 2 > FOR (Katya) 2 > PRE (Ruehan) 2 It might have changed somehow, but you can't figure out how. > An electronic hand-held reader (11s) > STR (Katya) 4 > FOR (Katya) 2 > PRE (Ruehan) 2 This is really a good example of modern engineering. The handle fits comfortably in the hand, the OCR is clean and efficient. More devices should be this well-designed. > Plants (11s) > STR (Katya) 2 > FOR (Katya) 2 > PRE (Ruehan) 2 The plants seem fine. > A lab rat (11s) > STR (Katya) 3 > FOR (Katya) 1 > PRE (Ruehan) 1 There's a reason that rats are the most common experimental animal. They're easy to care for, highly prone to cancer, will eat almost anything, and breed quickly. All very suitable. > An already-full psi-recording crystal (7s) > STR (Katya) 7 (We think this is actually meant to be "a blank empty recording crystal" because you're using it for the recording trick) Sparkly. And clear. Very crystalline. You all marvel at it for a little while. Katya considers hitting it with a hammer to demonstrate fracture planes. Ruehan thinks it would make a good piece of jewelry. > Eva (9s) > > STR (Katya) 4 > FOR (Katya) 5 > PRE (Ruehan) 4 This part is a little uncomfortable, as it doesn't really seem right to have experimented on Eva. She's the captain after all. It's quite clear why she's the captain. Definitely the boss. There's a feeling that maybe you should apologize for this foolishness. > Kith (9s) > STR (Katya) 3 > FOR (Katya) 4 > PRE (Ruehan) 5 In the past, most people have had the feeling that Kith reminds them of their mothers. That seems less true now. She's definitely less mom-like. Your mother was never really like Kith. > Katya (9s) > STR (Ruehan) 5 > FOR (Ruehan) 1 > PRE (Ruehan) 3 Katya feels a little odd after the fact, but can't quite put her funger on how or why. She's seems stronger and more buff afterwards though. Well, she doesn't think so, but most other people agree. Twig comments later that her relation to the Nomarche Hegemons is in fact quite obvious. He's a bit surprised he hadn't noticed it before. Ruehan comments afterwards: my impression is that power was put into each of the items/people, making each thing even more of what it is naturally. Eva's analysis: The threshhold of consciously noticing any effects looks like it's about 3 successes. It seems to make the things which are projected into more "how they are/should be/are seen"; Pre, Str, and Fortune seem to have subtly different effects, but they're all along that basic line. Throwing the energy in willy-nilly (roll for 7s) seems to have more "splash" - the effect is more erratic and uneven, and there's a smaller effect on those nearby. Whatever it is, it's definitely a lasting effect on the target, and not a psionic effect just on the people nearby; Twig wasn't in the room when you were doing the experiment, and noticed later. The decay rate for the effect isn't clear without more testing into that aspect, but probably not more than a day. The effects seemed to be more clear on people than they were on objects, though they varied a lot object to object, and the rolls on people were for lower difficulty and more successes, so it's difficult to sort out the different causes there.
