What is a Medline?:

Medline is a database established by the National Library of Medicine. It contains abstracts and citations from articles relating to a variety of health and medical questions.

Using PubMed:

Pubmed is a website that allows you to access and find articles in the Medline Database.

Getting Started:

How to navigate the PubMed webstie:

  • Describe the features : Features bar on the side, Search query box at the top
  • Introduction to PubMed: Click on the links to
    • Overview-brief intro to PubMed
    • Help-answers to questions about using PubMed
    • FAQ-some common questions about using PubMed
    • Tutorial-Advanced tutorial that covers all the features of PubMed

How to Search:

Enter keywords into the query box.

  • Enter phrases in " phrase" (i.e. pressure point)
  • Author search: Last name First name
  • Avoid common words such as "a, etc, either, else," Full list can be found on by clicking on HELP and looking for Stopwords

Some helpful hints when searching

  • Using Booleans- (must be entered in uppercase)
    • AND - to search for two things together
    • OR - to search for either keyword
    • NOT-eliminates subsets of the search query

Getting Results:

Hit go to get results

What do the results mean?

  • The articles are listed in summary format-including the author, title, and the source, plus a sentence from the abstract
  • Will list up to 20 articles at a time

Using Results:

Click on the authors name to get the abstract

Click on [related articles] to see similar articles

Click in the checkbox on the left to select, then hit save, and push ok to save the abstract

Click on Text to put webpage in text only format( no sidebar)

Use the browser to print if desired

Click on order at the bottom to order the complete journal article
