Discussion Questions on Descartes' Principles, part II

  1. Is Descartes a substantivalist or a relationalist about ontology?

  2. What does Descartes think those who affirm the existence of a vacuum mean? What is his argument that their view is false?

  3. Descartes defines 'movement in the ordinary sense' and 'movement properly speaking.' Why might he want to give the second definition in addition to the first? Does either definition capture what we ordinarily mean when we say that something is moving?

  4. Are Descartes' definitions of 'motion' consistent with his treatment of motion in his laws of impact?

  5. Descartes aims to explain all properties of material bodies in terms of the size and motion of their parts. At the end of book II he tries to give such an explanation of what it is for a body to be solid. What is the explanation? Is it plausible?
