Scenario 1: Harassment

Introduction : Console Chris : Encourage reporting Prof. X

You chose: Respond, "You shouldn’t let Prof. X get away with this. You have the right to be treated better than that. You should report Prof. X to the Chair of the department.”

Chris says, “You’re probably right, but I don’t see any way to deal with it. I can’t report the professor, because I need him to sign my thesis and write my recommendations. I’ll just manage.”

You can...

Let P handle it.
Express your understanding of the delicacy of Chris’s position but encourage Chris to talk to someone in the Graduate Students Office to discuss options, pointing out that the conversation can be kept confidential.
Go With P
Say, “Well, I think you are making a mistake, but it’s your decision. Let me know if there’s any way I can help.”
Throw Out Food
Point out that the stress Chris is experiencing is, or could be, interfering with work and encourage Chris to talk with a counselor or take advantage of the athletic facilities or meditation classes.
