The City of Cambridge  General Ordinances (Chapter 8.20) encode the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules. The City of Cambridge requires that MIT have a permit for the conduct of  recombinant DNA (rDNA) based research. This permit is renewed annually through the City of Cambridge Department of Public Health. Part of the permitting and renewal process requires that MIT CAB/ESCRO submit annual reports, including meeting minutes, to the City of Cambridge Biosafety Committee.  Under the city ordinance, no categories of rDNA based research are exempt from the requirement for CAB/ESCRO Committee registration, review and approval.
