CAES   Context-Aware Experience Sampling
Home   CAES Software Design Specifications and Code

Here is some legacy information about the design of the PDA version of CAES. We designed our tool explicitly for iPAQ PDA devices running the Microsoft PocketPC operating system. At the time, this was the most flexible and well-supported standard platform that supported a variety of sensor module plug-ins. Although the devices were costly, the price-point has dropped dramatically as the same functionality has migrated to mobile phones. The image here shows an early prototype of our system.

We did work with plug-ins including a camera, HR monitor, GPS, and barcode scanner. Not all these devices could be used simultaneously, but it was sometimes possible to use two devices in the same study.

We never tested the basic software on other PocketPC platforms, but the software should run with only minor modifications in simplest experience sampling mode.

At one point, here were the design specs, in case you find them useful.

Take a look at the documentation to get a sense of capabilities in the last released version (documentation). We no longer use or support this software and have migrated to mobile phones and the open source MyExperience project. However, if you really want the totally unsupported C++ code, you can grab right now from here. Please let us know if you find it helpful.
