Career Assistant Internship Positions 2008-2009

The MIT Careers Office (MITCO) offers Career Assistant (CA) positions for individuals who have a strong interest in gaining experience in the field of career development. A commitment of two semesters is required (August 18, 2008 to May 15, 2009) so that the CAs can participate in, contribute to, and benefit from a full cycle of MITCO activities. Qualifications
CA candidates should possess excellent organizational, communication, and multitasking skills. A strong professional interest in the field of career development and an interest in working with highly motivated students is a necessity. In addition, an ideal CA candidate should be flexible and possess a great deal of initiative. Note that it is strongly preferred that you are working toward a graduate degree in a related field or have a graduate degree.
Career Assistants must be able to work 18 to 20 hours per week for $14.44 per/hr with benefits for 9 months (approximately 39 weeks). CA’s must be available to begin one 30 hr. week of training on AUgust 18, 2008 and should be available for evening programming one night per week (Monday through Thursday) and 8am front desk coverage one morning (Monday through Friday) per week (duties vary according to position).

Career Assistant/Intern Responsibilities include:
- Brief "walk-in" sessions with students providing resume and cover letter critiques and answering quick questions related to career issues.
- Conducting practice interviews individually with students.
- Presenting workshops on career-related topics such as resume writing and interviewing skills.
- Special projects, such as developing workshops, creating educational materials (ex. Majors Guides and Tips sheets), and facilitating internship listservs.
- Co-planning/organizing events and workshops.
- Organizational/administrative tasks: answering the phone, greeting employers, registering students for events, etc.
Career Assistants specialize in one of the following areas and will receive weekly
supervision from a staff member from one of the following teams:
Preprofessional Advising: The Preprofessional Advising Career Assistant will work primarily with prehealth students and projects. The CA will help with event planning and logistics, presenting workshops, preprofessional advising walk-ins, mock interviews, essay critiques and possibly counseling appointments. In addition, the CA may also help with one or more of the following projects: MGH-MIT Shadow Program, data organization, chat room events, and web revisions. Skills and attributes desired: Attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, project management skills and an interest and ability to work with a wide range of constituents from freshmen to alums to professional school representatives. Freshman/Alumni Summer Internship Program (F/ASIP): F/ASIP (web.mit.edu/fasip) is a graded academic seminar designed to teach first-year students career development skills and equip them with the tools, resources and advising needed to secure and succeed in a summer internship. The F/ASIP CA will be the primary advisor for a section of the program's students; main responsibilities include presenting workshops, advising students individually and in groups, conducting walk-ins hours and planning events. Other possible projects include program assessment, employer outreach and workshop/curriculum development. Preferred qualifications include: strong organizational and interpersonal skills, comfort in giving presentations, ability to work independently, creativity, and an aptitude for working with freshmen students as well as upperclass peer mentors, employers, and alumni.
Employer Relations: Assist Employer Relations and Outreach Team to plan, organize, execute, and promote employer-related activities such as on-campus recruiting, employer recruiting, an Employer Advisory Board and Employer Resume Critiques. Work with Coordinator of On-Campus Recruiting to provide support to employers who wish to post jobs. Assist Coordinator of On-Campus Recruiting in the collection of recruiting data/statistics.
