Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) in Austria for Graduate Students in Natural and Social Sciences, Math, Policy and Engineering. Each summer, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) near Vienna, Austria, hosts a selected group of graduate students, primarily doctoral, from around the world in its Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). These students work closely with IIASA’s senior scientists on projects within the Institute’s 3 theme areas of Natural Resources & Environment, Population & Society, and Energy & Technology. The U.S. Committee for IIASA provides airfare and a modest living allowance for the applicants from American institutions who are selected to participate. The National Academies, Christine Mirzayan Internship Program
Designed to engage graduate science, engineering, medical, veterinary, business, and law students in the analysis and creation of science and technology policy and to familiarize them with the interactions of science, technology, and government. This program is open to graduate through postdoctoral students and is offered in January (12 weeks) and June (10 weeks).

The National Research Council Research Associateship Programs
For doctorate level scientists and engineers who can bring their special knowledge and research talents to work in research areas of interest to them, to the host laboratories, and to the Research Centers. Awards are made to Postdoctoral Associates (within 5 years of the doctorate) and Senior Associates (beyond 5 years from the doctorate).

Science Fellowship Opportunities: Congressional Science Fellows Program and related fellowships, internships:

  • AAAS Science and Technology Fellowships - Open to those with Ph.D.'s in the social, physical, or biological sciences, or equivalent doctoral-level degrees. Engineers with a master's degree and three years of experience are also eligible.
  • National Academies Fellowships - Predoctoral, dissertation, postdoctoral, and other fellowship programs for advanced study in research-based disciplines.
  • White House Fellowship Program - Candidates must have a record of achievement and be out of school, working in their chosen professions.
  • Presidential Management Fellowship Program - Designed to attract to the federal service outstanding graduate students (master's and doctoral-level) from a wide variety of academic disciplines who have an interest in, and commitment to, a career in the analysis and management of public policies and programs. Assignments may involve domestic or international issues, technological changes, health research, financial management, and many other fields.
