Additional Tips for Alumni and Long-Distance Job Seekers

Professional associations are also helpful in providing information on careers and publications relating to particular professions. Other job search services are sometimes offered by these groups as well. For example, the Boston chapter of the American Institute of Architects publishes a monthly job-listing newsletter and a Directory of local firms, hosts lectures and other gatherings of practitioners, has numerous committees which one may join to meet other architects, and shares office space and works collaboratively with a placement agency which serves the design professions. Check both the Encyclopedia of Associations and the National Trade & Professional Associations of the U.S. and Canada & Labor Unions for the organizations appropriate for you.

Many professional associations and independent publishers produce trade journals which often include job listings. They also tell of new initiatives, business developments and programs in a particular field. Organizations that are growing, moving, or receiving new contracts are potential employers for you to contact. Professional journals will help you identify these organizations. This same kind of information can be gathered from regional magazines and newspapers which feature articles on regional developments.

Besides providing information and counseling on the mechanics of starting and running a small business, local or regional Small Business Administrations publish directories to small businesses in a given area. They also offer information on and special sevices for minority- and women-owned enterprises.
