American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists 2004 Salary Survey

The following sites show comparative salary and cost of living in different locations. You may want to check several of these sites to see the range of variation among them:

  • SalaryValuation.com - Developed by MIT alumni. Site allows you to plug in details of your various job offers, housing options, signing bonus offers, and 401K options, and see how your projected expenses (including estimated state and federal taxes) make your options compare.
  • Moving.com
  • CNNMoney.com - Provides a salary comparison calculator but locations in their database are limited.
  • NYTimes salary calculator - This site, in addition to showing comparative value of a salary in one city vs. another also indicates how salaries in one city 'typically compare" to salaries in another location.

Salary Links on PhDs.org - This site offers many links relevant to scientists and engineers.

Salary.com - A comprehensive online database with salary information searchable by job title and geographic location.

The Riley Guide - Provides tips on finding salary information including advice on stock options.

Monster.com - Links to many sources of salary information.

Faculty Salary information - From the Chronicle of Higher Education

For additional career and salary resources, consult the Online Career Library and the General Career Resources page.

What's Missing? What Else to Consider When Comparing Job Offers - What all of the salary comparison tools above provide is a logical comparison of dollars and cents. What they do NOT provide is a broader framework for comparing offers, which includes personal values such as proximity to friends and family, quality of life (e.g. based on the individuals preference for urban or rural location, access to sports such as hiking, skiing, sailing), reputation of company, fit with longer term career goals, quality of supervisory relationship, training or learning opportunities, etc. For more on this aspect of comparing job offers, see http://web.mit.edu/career/www/workshops/negotiating/fac_career.html and http://web.mit.edu/career/www/workshops/negotiating/benefits.html.
