On-Campus Recruiting
Many MIT students are interested in work abroad during a summer, or after graduating. The MIT Careers Office (12-170) publishes extensive information about on-campus recruitment. By following the recruiting schedule you will be able to keep track of any overseas companies that recruit at MIT. A few of them also conduct interviews for prospective summer interns, whom they interview during their regular recruiting schedule.
MIT Library Resources
There are several books in the MITCO library that deal with the topic of overseas work. The Dewey Library in E53-238 is another good source of employment literature. World Scope is a reference that lists companies by country and city around the world. Other references that deal with international employment include: Hoover's Handbook of World Business: a Directory of American Firms Operating in Foreign Countries, and The World Chamber of Commerce.
MIT undergraduates with current ID cards may use the career library at Harvard's Office of Career Services, 54 Dunster Street, Cambridge, MA. They have a wide range of information on overseas volunteer and internship opportunities. MIT students are not eligible to meet with their counselors or use other services besides the library.
MIT Clubs and Alumni Abroad
You may contact the MIT Club in a country where you would like to find work. The Alumni Office in 10-110 can provide you with information about MIT Club contacts worldwide. In addition you may look up the names of alumni in various countries in the index in the back of the MIT Alumni Register. To contact alumni, write a letter outlining your skills and the kinds of work that would interest you, and inquire if a particular alumnus knows of any suitable opportunities in the company where he works.
The MIT European Club, in conjunction with international student organizations at other Boston area schools, has sponsored European Career Fairs where European companies come to the MIT campus to interview students for opportunities in Europe. MIT International Science and Technology Initiative
The MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) promote the internationalization of education and research at MIT. MISTI accomplishes its mission by sending over 160 interns to work or conduct research in Japan, China, India, Singapore, Germany, Italy, and France. These regionally oriented programs allow students to acquire a deeper understanding of how knowledge is created and employed in other cultures.
Since 1981, MISTI has arranged more than 1,400 internships for talented MIT graduate and undergraduate students. The internships are aligned with the students' field of study and last for a summer or a year. In addition to internship placement, we help students obtain permanent positions by arranging interviews with program sponsors and publishing a Resume Book twice a year.
