How to Work a Career Fair

Do's and Don'ts

Do's

Dress appropriately. At MIT, we recommend that students dress in "business casual" clothes. (Companies tell us that this is what they expect. They don't expect you to come to the Career Fair wearing a suit. But torn jeans and a T-shirt won't make a good impression on the company representative. Do speak clearly, maintain eye contact, and ask intelligent questions (based on what you've learned about the company through your research, and the information you've gathered at the Fair).

Don'ts

Don't immediately start grabbing the giveaway items from the table. Don't ask basic questions that could be answered from a simple visit to the company's web site, or a quick look at their brochure (Like: "What does your company do?") Don't show up during the last 10 or 15 minutes of the Fair. Don't expect a personal response if you submit your resume at a Career Fair.
