Negotiating Your Future: Successfully Evaluating and Negotiating Your Job Offers

Accepting and Declining Offers

Accepting Offers

Try not to accept an offer until you have fully evaluated the situation. (If you are still unsure, please make an appointment with a career counselor to discuss your offers.)

  1. Once you have accepted an offer, (after experiencing several interviews to make comparisons and to maintain some leverage) you have made a commitment and should withdraw from being a candidate with other companies.

To renege on a commitment, is often considered unethical and unprofessional.

  2. Please confirm your acceptance of an offer by phone, e-mail or in a letter to the company reiterating your new salary, if applicable, starting date, title and any pertinent details you have negotiated.
Send thank you letters to your references, in appreciation for their recommendations.
  3. Contact the MIT Careers Office regarding offers and acceptance.

Declining Offers

When you decline an offer, "don't burn those bridges." Thank the employer and state that after careful consideration, you have decided to accept another offer. The companies you decline now, maybe networking opportunities for you in the future.
