Negotiating Your Future: Successfully Evaluating and Negotiating Your Job Offers

4) Your Potential Boss

He or she has the ability to see you excel in the company. You want this individual to to be an advocate for you to senior members of the organization. Here are questions to consider:

  • How long has s/he been in their position? To whom does s/he report?
  • Was this person promoted into the position?
  • Do both the supervisor and his/her superior have influence to make crucial decisions for the department? Are they supported by the leadership/project management team?
  • What is the person's background and experience?
  • Would you consider this individual to be a potential mentor?
  • What are his/her management style and work expectations?
  • What is the supervisor's growth potential? (This may or may not determine your future in the organization.)
  • What is the person's reputation? How do others see this person?
  • Is this someone you can work with in a comfortable and productive way?
