3) Culture of the Organization

Research (an on-line site to research companies) the company website and reflect on the following questions:

  • What is the vision/philosophy of the organization, mission of the department?
  • Does it fit or conflict with what you believe in ethically and morally?

Review the history of the organization e.g. financial, growth potential, etc.

  • How much do you value the products or services?
  • What is the business culture, business strategy, reputation/image within the company and how are they viewed in the global market place?
  • Is the company expanding are they in the midst of being merged with or acquired by another company?
  • What are the financial and profitability issues?
  • Has the growth potential affected its profitability? How will this affect you, the position, department, products and markets?
  • Who are the competitors of the organization you may be working for, locally, nationally and globally? Why is this important?
  • What is the mgt. team like? This will give you an idea of how decisions are made and who influences those decisions. Are they a flat, matrix or hierarchical organization?

What are the opportunities and threats affecting the organization? (Review SWOT - Strengths, Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats)

  • Where does this scenario fit in the SWOT model?:
The company is developing the next generation system creating leading edge technology for the department you are considering. How much of the market share is in Asia? Would the Asian crisis be considered a threat to the mission of the organization?

Inquire about the company's culture.

  • How good is the company at keeping its employees happy? Companies say they value their employees. What incentives do they offer to retain their employees?
  • Environment - What are your impressions of company infra-structure and atmosphere? Is the department structure one that you will feel comfortable in?
  • What do you see as the rewards and benefits working with a potential employer?
  • What is the growth potential of your job and salary?

Speak with employees from the company, company's competitors and vendors to gain their valuable insight.
