As you compare your offers, reflect on these questions:
- What will be your main job responsibilities? Does the work correspond with the your interests and make good use of your skills and competencies?
- Will this position be a stepping stone for you?
- Are you looking to gain a certain amount of experience and then move up the organizational ladder or move on to other organizations? What are ways to build a good reputation, regardless of whether you remain with the company or not.
- Does the company encourage and reward self-managed learners?
Consider this scenario:
You have graduated with a professional degree in architecture and have focused your thesis on the design of an addition to an existing Aquarium in Florida. While doing your thesis research, you spent a lot of time researching new technology and theory related to live exhibits, and have spoken to several staff members of the aquarium. You are offered a position with direct involvement, including travel and client contact, at the beginning stages of a similar aquarium project. Does the firm value your knowledge base and will they integrate your expertise into their project?
The outcome of this scenario depends on the kind of staff working on the project in the office, and how much the office is willing to hear new ideas from employees. It also assumes you have the self determination and personality to fit the position. Is this employer open to their employees' individual initiatives?
- What formal training/advancement programs are available?
- How long will it take you to get from engineer to principle engineer, assistant professor to associate professor, scientist to senior scientist, etc.
- Ask about the careers of others who have held the job previously.
