Negotiating Your Future: Successfully Evaluating and Negotiating Your Job Offers

Factors to Think About:

Congratulations! The offers are pouring in and you are unsure of which offer is best for you. Now comes the difficult decision which offer should you accept? How will you determine which offer is the most beneficial for you?

Preparation is essential - To be informed, familiarize yourself with your field, know your interests, and what is important to you.

Timing

Some students feel pressured in accepting an offer. You can ask for an extension but be reasonable about the request.

Consider the following scenario:

You are interested in an employer who has made you an offer. However, you still have two interviews remaining. An appropriate answer might be:

"I am very interested in your company and know that I have much to contribute to the organization... I am requesting more time to make an informed decision (two weeks, one month +) is that acceptable?"

Give the employer the date of when you will be responding back or ask them when they will need a firm commitment. Ask, professors, colleagues, family, friends, and MITCO staff to listen to your strategies of negotiation, as you assess your offers. Ask them to provide their perspectives on a well evaluated job offer that will create a gateway to future career attainment.
