Networking 101

Introduction Exercise

  1. Write a 20 to 30 word script which includes your name, type of job or information you are seeking, and related skills/experience. The more specific you are, the easier it is for people to help you.
    • Greeting: name, school, background, how you received their name
    • Bridge: why you're interested in speaking with them, key accomplishments, related skills
    • Primary Goal: meeting, referral of name
    • Secondary Goal: resources, referral
  2. When you are finished, pair up with someone
  3. Person A present self-introduction
    • Person B respond to introduction and request. Do have any information or contacts (anyone on your "developing your network worksheet"?) that would help this job searcher?
  4. Person B give feedback to person A. First mention what they did/said well, then make suggestions about how they might improve their self- introduction (make note of body language, eye contact, handshake, rate of speech, focus)
  5. Switch roles and repeat role-play and feedback
  6. After you complete the exercise, develop and practice 3 versions of your self-introduction to be used in various networking scenarios.
    • 5 second sound bite
    • 2 minute commercial
    • 10 minute infomercial
