Keeping Your Network Organized and Alive

Organized:

  • It is important to keep a database of who you have met, where you met; and on back of business cards, it can be helpful if you make note of some points of discussion that were exchanged. Also note what your "next steps" are with this contact.
  • Additionally, you should keep a record of your interviews for your own information. Names, titles, addresses, dates, and major points of discussion will enable you to remember who told you what, and how to get back in touch with your contacts.

Alive:

It is important to maintain a balance of staying connected yet being respectful of your contact's time. You do not want to become a pest. Below are some suggested methods for accomplishing this delicate task:

  • if you've met with a contact that your contact referred you to, send a note or phone to let them know how their recommendation helped you in your job search
  • if you followed any advice your contact suggested during your meeting, send a note or phone to let them phone how their suggestions helped you in your job search
  • send any information (relevant articles) that may be of interest to your contact
  • send festive holiday cards
  • periodically check-in and let them know where you are in your job search
  • if you landed a job, send a note to everyone who helped you along the way to inform them of your new position
