SAMPLE COVER LETTER FOR A CONSULTING POSITION

November 5, 1999

Ms. Jane Doe
McKinsey & Company, Inc.
600 Campus Drive
Florham Park, NJ 07932-1046

Dear Ms. Doe:

In 1999 I completed my bachelor's in Economics, and in June 2000 I plan to graduate from MIT with a master's in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. After attending several of your presentations on campus this fall, I am very interested in working at McKinsey & Company because of your company's reputation and the opportunities presented.

I have a wide variety of experiences that I can draw upon. My economics background provides a solid foundation for business analysis. Through my engineering courses and work experience I have learned how to think about and approach problems analytically. I have also developed and demonstrated strong interpersonal skills from working closely with many engineers on projects, delivering numerous presentations on my work, and heavily involving myself in extracurricular activities. One notable experience was my participation in a semifinalist entry for MIT's 1998 Entrepreneurship Competition. In this competition, I learned a great deal about business plan development and market research, which I can readily apply to management consulting.

After going to your presentation at MIT and talking to friends in your company, I learned that McKinsey is an ideal place for a highly self-motivated person to work. I am impressed by the design of your associate program, where meaningful and challenging tasks are assigned. Additionally, your company's unparalleled reputation for training your employees, whether formally or on the job, is very appealing to me. McKinsey is the best place to work in management consulting, and I feel that I could contribute and succeed there given the opportunity.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications for working at McKinsey. I will contact you next Tuesday to follow-up on this possibility. If you have any questions, I can be reached by phone at (617)-XXX-XXXX and by email at xxx@mit.edu.

Sincerely,

Richard Duggan
Human Resources
Biomedical Devices, Inc.
101 First Street,
Cambridge, MA 02139

Dear Mr. Duggan:

I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Biomedical Engineering (degree anticipated June 1999). I am writing in response to the Biomaterials Engineer position posted on your company’s web site. I understand that you seek a candidate who has experience prototyping of an implantable drug delivery device, as well as with biomaterials, tissue interactions, and impurity identification. I hope you will agree that my qualifications and experience meet your needs.

In collaboration with the Orthopedic Implant Group at MGH, I have developed a prototype of an orthopedic implant using biomaterials. In addition, I am experienced in surface and thin film characterization, and elemental and molecular identification. In addition, I have designed and performed experiments to solve issues of contaminants on surfaces and impurity identification. At MGH I assessed the bioincompatibility of orthopedic implants and surgical instruments.

Throughout my research project I have cooperated with professors in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Biology Department. At the same time I have worked closely with scientists and physicians at a biomedical device manufacturing firm which is a partner in the research on orthopedic implants. These experiences have taught me the importance of teamwork and good communication. I have learned to collaborate effectively with researchers who have many different personalities and work styles.

I am attracted to your company because of its innovation in biomaterials and its motivation to turn ideas into safe medical products. Thank you for your attention. I will follow up next week by phone to see if we can set up an interview.

Sincerely,

John Smith

Dr. Samuel Watson
Physics Department Chairman
Claremont College
Claremont, CA 91711

Dear Dr. Watson:

I am happy to have the chance to apply for a faculty position at Claremont College. Enclosed is a copy of my current curriculum vitae, which includes a list of my publications and my teaching and research proposals.

My teaching philosophy has developed through my experience as a high school chemistry teacher, as a teaching assistant at Harvard University, and as a research supervisor at M.I.T. In my experience, the most successful classes are those in which there is a high level of student participation. I will try to encourage classroom participation by carefully organizing each lecture. With clear organization, students are more likely to believe they understand the framework of the class and will therefore be willing to ask questions about sections they do not understand. A second technique that I think will be useful is asking questions of individual students in order to create a more participatory classroom environment. I would also be interested in developing new courses, particularly courses for non-physicists that might focus on a single topic of current interest.

The research project I would like to pursue at Claremont involves coherent time-domain teraherz spectroscopy of condensed matter systems. I think this is an excellent project for an undergraduate school because it explores exciting physics, it involves many useful technologies, and it is unusual enough that there will be very little competition with larger research groups.

I have asked that four letters of recommendation be sent to you on my behalf. The writers are James Smith, my thesis advisor; Marvin Gardner, my post-doctoral advisor; and Randall Miller and Daniel Golden, in whose courses I was a teaching assistant at Harvard University. Their addresses appear on the last page of my curriculum vitae.

I appreciate being considered for your faculty position. Please let me know if I can provide you with any additional information to support my application.

Sincerely,

Jane Doe
