Program on the Pharmaceutical Industry (POPI)

The Program on the Pharmacetuical Industry was a multidisciplinary research program led by faculty from the MIT Schools of Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Management. Participating faculty and graduate students included those with expertise in the fields of biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, economics, medicine, and the management sciences. The factors that drive, constrain and enhance the performance and competitiveness of the pharmaceutical industry were explored through POPI research. In addition, the MIT Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Initiative (PHARMI) was established as part of POPI, with research focused on a wide array of issues relating to pharmaceutical manufacturing, including new technology evaluation, operations strategy, information technology, supply-chain management, performance measurement, benchmarking and organizational learning. PHARMI also involved a significant pharmaceutical manufacturing benchmarking effort as part of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Benchmarking Project.
