Case Studies and Strategies in Drug Discovery and Development
Ernst R. Berndt, Anthony J. Sinskey, Steven R. Tannenbaum
7.549, 15.137j, 20.486, HST.916
This course relies on actual cases of drug development, involves interactions with industry, and includes a team project with across-MIT membership (biology, chemistry, biological engineering, HST, and Sloan). A major goal is to analyze actual cases of drug development, with case material provided by senior industry R&D scientists, and then to determine how the discovery and development process might be influenced by application of new and future technologies, and to evaluate the economic impact of application of these technologies. The stages in drug discovery and development reviewed in this class begins with target identification (followed by optimization of structures for pharmaceutical properties, bioavailability, and safety) and ends with post-launch surveillance subsequent to the approval of preclinical and clinical data submitted to the FDA.
