The summer was a busy and exciting time for us at CBI. We have refined our Research Portfolio, launched our new Biomanufacturing TRP, increased awareness of CBI's activities through an internal outreach campaign across MIT, and established a tighter operating model for the organization.

I want to especially thank Claude Canizares, VP of Research and Associate Provost, as well as all the Council members and faculty who generously shared their time and input in our Strategic Planning Process. Among the key things these discussions highlighted for us was the importance of CBI's Safe Haven model for breakthrough collaborative innovation, and a strong desire to leverage lessons learned from other industries.

Over the next few months, we look forward to announcing a number of new programs for 2008 that will focus on themes that emerged from our increased outreach efforts. We know you'll be interested in them — so stay tuned.

Regards,
Gigi Hirsch
Interim Executive Director

I am so pleased with the progress we have made at CBI in the past few months. Thanks to the hard work of Gigi Hirsch, Sherene Aram, Cheryl Mottley, and my co-directors, Ernie Berndt and Steve Tannebaum--not to mention the outstanding guidance and help from many of our Council members and other faculty--we are building a whole new foundation for CBI that I believe will have tremendous payoffs for everyone.

I believe CBI plays an important role within the MIT universe. Working with colleagues from business management and bioengineering in an interdisciplinary effort, and partnering with thought leaders and practitioners in industry and government, creates a rich field for progress and innovation that is hard to match anywhere.

I'm particularly gratified by the opportunities we provide for students, whose involvement in hands-on research and help in finding real world solutions to complex problems are preparing them in ways that will make them uniquely equipped to handle the challenges of the future. (You can read some of their outstanding work in our Publications section below). We are truly preparing the next generation of leaders that will move healthcare innovation and improvement to new heights. I invite you to join with me and my colleagues in an exciting and enriching endeavor at CBI.

Regards,
Tony Sinskey
Faculty Co-Director
