Associated Academic Departments & Programs

The CGCS is an independent research center in the MIT School of Science that involves participants also from the School of Engineering, as well as other areas of the Institute. The Center's research team is comprised of faculty, staff and students, most of whom are affiliated with one of the following academic departments at MIT:
Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS)
Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)
Chemistry
Biology
Chemical Engineering
MIT/WHOI Joint Program

Additional Interaction through Collaborative Efforts

A key activity of the CGCS is the Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, which involves extensive interdisciplinary interaction. The Global Change Joint Program is a broad-based endeavor that engages the CGCS in collaborative research efforts across campus and beyond. Formed in 1991 as a joint effort of the CGCS and the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research (CEEPR), the Joint Program brings CGCS members together with faculty, staff and student researchers in these MIT departments and other organizations:

Political Science
Economics
Sloan School of Management
Engineering Systems Division
Technology and Policy Program
Earth System Initiative
Energy Initiative
Laboratory for Energy and the Environment
Center for International Studies
Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory

Similarly, through involvement in the MIT Alliance for Global Sustainability, the CGCS is strengthening ties with climate researchers at the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology (ETH), the University of Tokyo, and Chalmers University of Technology. This interdisciplinary and international approach, which is organized to encourage collaboration of researchers with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests, is vital to effectively confront the complex challenge of understanding and predicting global change.

Associated Personnel     top    [Directory of Researchs' Interests]

The CGCS includes active participation by approximately 25 MIT faculty who are involved with research and teaching in an area related to at least one the five fundamental processes of the global environment, or with global climate models.

In addition there are about 30 full-time professional research staff members and postdoctoral associates, as well as a large number of graduate and undergraduate students working on CGCS-related projects.

The CGCS Director is Ronald G. Prinn, TEPCO Professor of Atmospheric Science. The Associate Director is Rafael L. Bras, Deward A. Abdun-Nur Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Professor of Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. The Assistant Director is Anne Slinn.

The tables below list the MIT personnel associated with the CGCS, along with their corresponding department affiliation and research area. The CGCS Directory provides summaries of individual research interests as well as contact e-mail addresses and links to individual profile pages.
