With roots going back to 1916, the "Practice School" — as the David H. Koch School of Chemical Engineering Practice is commonly known — is a key element of the Ph.D.CEP and M.S.CEP degree programs. In PracticeSchool, small groups of students spend two months at each of two host company sites. Under the supervision of a resident MIT "station director," teams work on intensive projects of real strategic value to the host companies.
Practice School is very different from a traditional co-op program; you will have day-to-day interaction with company personnel and management teams, you will be called upon to communicate the process and results of your work both orally and in writing, and you will be graded on your performance. Specifically, the MIT station director will evaluate your technical ability, communication skills, leadership, and professionalism.
While resident at company sites, you are paid a graduate student stipend and your tuition costs are covered. Housing, usually in attractive apartments, is provided by the host companies.
In recent years, host companies have included:
- Practice School Locations:
- BP Chemicals, Ltd.
- Cabot Corporation
- Cargill Research
- General Mills, Inc.
- GlaxoSmithKline
- Mawana Sugars
- National Renewable Energy Laboratory
- Novartis Pharmaceuticals
- Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics
