Visit the MIT Graduate Admissions website. You may apply online through CollegeNet, our online application provider, or download the application.

Can the application fee ($70) be waived or deferred?
We understand the expense of applying to graduate programs; however, the application fee cannot be waived or deferred except in the case of minority US citizen applicants. In all other cases, MIT will not allow us to consider an application unless the application fee accompanies it.

If you are a minority US citizen, you may write a letter explaining why you are unable to pay this fee; please submit the letter with your application.

When are the application deadlines?
January 2 for September matriculation, and November 1 for February matriculation. Few students are admitted for February.

Will you notify me when you have received all of my application materials?
Once your application is submitted through collegenet, we will be able to start updating your application.  As we start processing materials for your application we will let you know what you are still missing by e-mail.   You will receive a final confirmation once all materials have been received by e-mail.

Can I send in additional materials?
You may submit any other materials you think is relevant and important to support your application

What is supplemental materials?
Supplemental materials are part of your application. Required supplemental materials include the following:  your standardize tests scores (GRE and/or TOFEL), official transcripts from all undergraduate/graduate program you have attended, 3 letters of recommendation (Department prefers that your references submit them through internet)

Can you check to see if my supplemental materials have arrived?
Once you have submitted your application on the internet, we will be able to get to your application and update you if there is anything missing.

Can I send in more than 3 letters of recommendation?
Yes, the online system can only submit 3, the rest you can have them send in though the mail.

I have been working for a while, can I have one of my supervisor as the reference?
Yes, generally one of your letters of recommendation can be other than your professors.

Where should I send my supplemental materials?
Please submit all supplemental materials to the following address:
       Massachusetts Institute of Technology

GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL Exams

Is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) mandatory?
Only the general portion of the GRE is required for admission to the department. However, you can take the optional subject/advanced section in your undergraduate major if you feel it will give the Admissions Committee more insight into your qualifications. Test scores should be sent directly to MIT from ETS. Photocopies of GRE scores will not be accepted. GRE scores are valid for 5 years. Once scores are received by MIT we will continue to have them on record as long as the scores are still valid. We can not check to see if your GRE scores are here until you have submitted your online application.

What department and school code should I indicate for GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL test score reports?
The institution code for MIT is R3514 and our department code is 1001.

Can you give me an idea of my chances for admission, based on GRE scores or Class Rank, for example?
We can make no preliminary evaluation based on one or two qualifications. The Admissions Committee carefully reviews the entire application (recommendations, essay, grades, test scores, previous research experience, etc.) in making its decisions.

What is the minimum score for the GRE test and the minimum GPA?
There is no minimum score for the GRE and GPA.

Is the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) mandatory for all international applicants?
If your first language is not English, you are required to take the TOEFL test. This applies even if you have already attended an English-speaking university. Test scores should be sent directly to MIT from ETS. Photocopies of TOEFL scores will not be accepted. TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years. Once scores are received by MIT we will continue to have them on record as long as the scores are still valid. We can not check to see if your TOEFL scores are here until you have submitted your online application.

English is the official language of my country; do I still need to take the TOFEL exam?
No.  You do not need to take the TOEFL exam if the official language of your country is English.  Please indicate on your online application the languages of instruction for both your primary and secondary education. Some international students from English speaking countries still choose to take the TOEFL exam to provide our admissions committee with additional information regarding their English skills. Please contact us if you are not sure if the TOEFL is required.

Is my TOFEL/GRE score as XXX, good enough?
We do not give student advice on whether their scores are good enough to apply to MIT.

What is your minimum requirement for TOFEL?
Paper base: 600
Computer Base: 250
Internet Base: 100

For details, please visit ETS's TOFEL site.

Admission and Review Process

What is the review process timetable?
We receive over 400 applications for September matriculation. Our Admissions Committee reviews applicants throughout February and early March. Applicants are typically notified in writing by early March. The Committee reads applications for February matriculation during November, and applicants are notified in writing by mid- to late December.

I am an undergraduate chemistry major. Do I have a chance of being admitted? Are there courses I should take to strengthen my engineering background?
Most of our admitted students have an undergraduate background in chemical engineering; however, we do admit students with training in fields such as biology, chemistry, material science, physics, or mechanical engineering. These students may need an additional semester of coursework (especially transport phenomena and reaction engineering) to strengthen their chemical engineering background and prepare for the doctoral qualifying exams.

To help you decide if your background has prepared you to take our core classes required of our graduate students, please see the list of required classes at http://web.mit.edu/cheme/graduate/phdscd.html

Does the Department admit its own S.B. students to the graduate program?
We consider our own undergraduates for the M.S.CEP program, but for no other degrees. This policy is difficult for us, because we must turn away some excellent students. However, we feel very strongly that our students benefit by going to another school for an advanced degree. We make the M.S.CEP exception because the Practice School has no equivalent at other schools.

Would it help my chances to send my application directly to a specific faculty member?
Admission decisions are made by a departmental committee composed of about 12 faculty members. The decision is based on overall qualifications, independent of research interest. If you try to bypass the regular admissions route, you risk having your application misplaced.

Is it possible to take courses on a part time basis?
The only option for part time enrollment is special student status, which implies enrollment without intention to attain a degree. The application form, which must be submitted for each term of enrollment, is available from the MIT Graduate Admissions Office. Approval of a special student application is made by the departmental Graduate Officer, based on the qualifications and preparedness of the applicant for the intended course. Courses are offered during the day and generally meet 2-3 times per week.

Is there a cap on the number of graduate students admitted to MIT?
There is no cap on the number of graduate students admitted to MIT.  Departments admit as many as they can support based on their RA, TA and fellowship resources, as well as the number of faculty available to advise on research.

What is the percentages of the USA/International graduate students are enrolled each year?
It depends on the funding of each admission year as well as the need of each research projects in the department.

Do all supporting documents such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, or test scores need to be sent to the admission office before the application deadline?
Yes, everything in your application should be post marked by the deadline date. We understand sometimes the letters of recommendation may not get to us by the deadline and we will wait for reasonable delays from your recommenders.  However, it is each applicant’s best interest to have all materials to us by deadline since the review of completed applications begins immediately after the deadline.

Applications will not be reviewed without the GRE and TOEFL exam scores.  Students should plan to take both exams if needed 4 to 6 weeks before the application deadline. It takes ETS 4 to 6 weeks to report the scores to MIT.

Funding Student Support

What kind of funding is available to support students in the program?
Students are generally supported by a variety of fellowships and research and teaching assistantships during their time at MIT. These appointments pay tuition and a competitive stipend. Students are encouraged to seek outside fellowships to help finance their graduate studies. Quite a few of our students are supported by NSF, DOD, GEM, Hertz, as well as other government and corporate sources.

Which professors in your department are looking for Research Assistants?
After you are admitted, you will be given chance to meet with all faculty to discuss the possibility and openings in their labs.
