We offer graduate study in chemical engineering leading to Master's and Doctoral degrees. The Ph.D., and an equivalent Sc.D., are based on a thesis describing original research. The Ph.D.CEP also requires a research thesis, but includes significant practical and business components. The "Chemical Engineering Practice" degrees - M.S.CEP and Ph.D.CEP - are unique to MIT.

Chemical Engineering participates in the Program in Polymer Science and Technology (PPST), Leaders for Manufacturing (LFM), and several other MIT interdepartmental programs.

"The atmosphere of inquiry, discovery, invention, and application that exists in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT is extraordinarily stimulating. You literally have to be here to appreciate the sense of excitement that permeates the department that comes from working at the leading edge of science and engineering, and applying new discoveries to solving important societal problems. In addition to the intellectual and professional rewards of studying at MIT, there is the personal benefit of forging lifelong relationships with faculty and student colleagues."

    Robert C. Armstrong
Head of the Department, June 1997
