Faculty Distinctions

ChemE professor Robert S. Langer recently received the 1999 Gustavus John Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest, presented by the American Chemical Society's northeastern section on April 8th. In a talk entitled "Bio-materials and How They Change Our Lives," Professor Langer spoke about his work developing biodegradable scaffolding to deliver drugs within the body and for the regeneration of organs. Professor Langer was honored for his "interdisciplinary approach to solving medical problems through polymer chemistry and engineering". Last month, Professor Langer also received the 1999 Award in Polymer Chemistry from the American Chemical Society for developing polymers that make brain cancer treatments safer and more effective, that provide scaffolding on which to grow tissues such as new skin and other applications. Congratulations to Professor Langer on this highly-regarded recognition.

Quarter Century Club Honors Four From ChemE

MIT News Office
Edited by Greg Sands

ChemE professors Robert C. Armstrong, Robert E. Cohen and C. Michael Mohr, along with Research Affiliate Barry A. Solomon, were among those inducted recently at the annual MIT "Quarter Century Club" (QCC) luncheon, for their 25 years of service to the Institute.

Professor Sheila A. Widnall, Insitute Professor and former Secretary of the Air Force, was the guest speaker. QCC board member Professor George F. Koster of the Physics Department served as master of ceremonies.

QCC membership is offered to faculty, administrative, research, support and service staff with 25 years of employment with the Institute. The primary purpose of the Club is to promote good fellowship among long-term associates of the community. The Quarter Century Club is a part of the Office of Special Community Services (OSCS).

The full QCC will welcome new members at the annual summer picnic on August 17th from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Johnson Atheletics Center. Other QCC events in 1999 include the Silver Club High Tea for Ladies on October 12th at the Faculty Club and the holiday gathering on December 7th in the Stratton Student Center's Sala de Puerto Rico.

Campus Concerts Highlight ChemE Community

by Janet Fischer

Noteworthy musical performances highlighted talent from the ChemE community during April. Support Staff member Glorianne Collver-Jacobson was featured in a Guitar Trio concert of Latin American music in an April 8th concert at the MIT Chapel. The concert was warmly received by a sizable audience!

Glori has shared her musical talents here at MIT for many years and her trio's blend of Latin American works was distinctively enjoyable.

Grad Student End-of-Year Highlights

by Janet Fischer

Runners took to the streets of Boston again on Patriot's Day, Monday, April 19th, for the 103rd running of the Boston Marathon. Amidst the throng was ChemE graduate student Daniel Stafford, running in his 2nd Boston Marathon. While he and the other runners battled the warm weather throughout the afternoon, Stafford finished in a very respectable 3:14. His adoring fans were there to greet him at the finish line! Congratulations to Dan on an outstanding achievement...again!

Several people have asked me about the carnival games that have been part of our TGIF parties for the past four years. They are provided by Ron Pinske, also known as Dumbo the Clown! Besides his clown business and games, Ron can provide a mini-golf course (which we have enjoyed here in the Department), a moonwalk, and perform magic shows. He is pleased to receive inquiries about bookings at (781) 871-8083.

The April 30th TGIF party marks the last official duties of the 1998-99 GSC. Led by Lily Koo, they have worked very hard to provide fun events in the Department including TG's, the Holiday Party, quals practice talks, orientation presentations, etc. Their efforts have been greatly appreciated by many of us. Thank you to Lily Koo, Sonja Sharpe, Dan Stafford, Dave Matheu, Casim Sarkar and David Collins --- you have done a wonderful job!
