Professor Doug Lauffenburger is this year's recipient of the Engineering Foundation Amgen Award. He will receive the award at the Engineering Foundation Biochemical Engineering Conference this summer. Please join us in congratulating Doug on this well-deserved recognition!
The past three winners are Danny Wang, Jay Bailey, and Mike Shuler, so MIT ChemE is well-represented here.
Congratulations to Professor Howard Brenner, who was elected on April 17th, to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Brenner will be among the newly-elected members honored at a National Induction Ceremony, which will be held at the House of the Academy in Cambridge this October.
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1779, during the American Revolution, by individuals who contributed prominently to the philosophical foundations of the new nation and to the establishment of its government and institutions. Today, it is a learned society with a dual function: to honor achievement in science, scholarship, the arts, and public affairs; and to conduct a varied program of projects and studies reflecting the interests of its members and responsive to the needs and problems of society. The Academy's elected membership represents distinction and achievement in the entire range of the intellectual disciplines and professions.

Professor Jackie Y. Ying has been recently appointed to be an Editor for Advances in Chemical Engineering. This series of publications provides reviews of the latest developments in chemical engineering, with special theme volumes covering interdisciplinary areas of research in which chemical engineers are making key contributions.
Congratulations to Professor Ying for her selection to this important post!
The Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering Practice (Ph.D. CEP) has now been officially approved. Appreciation goes to the faculty in general, and in particular to Bob Cohen, who played a pivotal role in shepherding the proposal through MIT's approval process.
The Ph.D. CEP was created to address a growing belief among our faculty that the traditional engineering science doctoral education is not optimum for the majority of our doctoral candidates who plan a career in industry. There is a strong sense that the doctoral thesis is too long and that the combined course work and thesis experience is too narrow to equip students for the degree of flexibility they need for an industrial career in the coming century. This problem is partially alleviated by the Practice School Program, which over half our doctoral students attend.
A successful chemical engineering career in the coming decades will require fundamental education in three important areas:
Our current Practice School and doctoral programs prepare our graduates well for the first two educational needs. The incorporation of business, management and economics into our doctoral educational process is the focus of the new degree.
For more details on the new Ph.D. in ChemE Practice, please contact Professor Armstrong (rca@mit.edu/253-4581).
Congratulations to long-time ChemE support staffer, and now retiree, Kathryn Brownell, who recently received her B.A. in Liberal Studies from Lesley College in a ceremony held at Brandeis University last Monday. Brownell retired from MIT in March of 1996 after over 30 years of service to the Institute. In her final position she worked as long-time Adminstrative Assistant to Professors Jack Howard and John Longwell and Professor Emeritus Hoyt Hottel. She was well-known and well-loved around the Department and the Institute for her kind and thorough professionalism and distinctive artistic abilities. Best wishes to Kathy on this important, and hard-earned achievement!
Please welcome new ChemE Support Staff member Sandy Youell. Sandy, who began her new position in ChemE on Monday, May 24th, comes to us after several years at the MIT Property Office.
Sandy is filling a new position, working 20 hours per week for Professor Linda Griffith and 10 hours per week for Professor Alex Klibanov (Chemistry).
Sandy can be reached at:
